Men's Patten Overshoe, 1830-1850

01

Artifact Overview

Residents in early 19th century cities might attach a patten like this to the bottoms of their thin leather and fabric shoes before going for a walk. The iron ring raised the foot off the wet pavement and carried the pedestrian safely through any mud-filled puddles -- keeping both foot and shoe clean and dry.
