Artifact Overview

A craze for sending valentines began in America in the immediate decades before the Civil War. Valentines provided a way for young middle-class men and women to express budding feelings of love and to start courting a suitable partner. Valentine writers offered youthful suitors pages of sentimental and sometimes comic poetry to adapt and copy into store-bought or handmade love notes.
