American musical theater has a long history and a canon of classics that have become known worldwide. But starting in the 1980s, musicals reached greater heights of popularity, ushering in a new era of Broadway.
- Broadway Florist Sign, Paducah, Kentucky, 1993 - In the mid-1970s, John Margolies began to assemble a visual record of America's built roadside landscape. Over the following three decades, he traveled thousands of miles to photograph the overlooked and often quickly vanishing structures that had grown out of American automobile culture and main street commerce. His photographs of hotels, motels, diners, service stations, drive-ins and attractions celebrate and capture a unique chapter of American history.

In the mid-1970s, John Margolies began to assemble a visual record of America's built roadside landscape. - Cartoon, Passengers Crowded in a "Broadway Stage" Omnibus, 1846 - The first horse-drawn omnibuses on American streets appeared in the late 1820s. These large, enclosed vehicles provided regular, fare-based transportation on fixed routes through cities. The modern motor bus serves the same purpose in American cities today. "Omnibus" is a Latin word meaning "for all."
