- Dr. Benjamin Spock's Pocket Book of Baby and Child Care,"1955 - First published in 1946, pediatrician Benjamin Spock's book transformed childhood for generations of children. Instead of espousing the rigid doctrines of his day, Spock advocated a flexible, more compassionate approach to parenting--encouraging parents to trust their instincts, listen to and play with their children, and appreciate their individual differences. When Spock died in 1998, his book had sold nearly 50 million copies worldwide.

The healthy baby girl pictured here -- named after the center's benefactor -- was the first child delivered by a nurse from the Clara Ford Nursing Center.
