Sucaryl, a cyclamate-based sweetener, was first marketed to the public in 1951. Though Sucaryl promised sweet-tasting foods without adding calories, links to possible increased cancers risks spurred the Food and Drug Administration to ban cyclamates in 1969.

After experimenting with ways to preserve milk, Gail Borden introduced Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk in 1856. What was advertised as nourishment for young children soon gained popularity as a baking and cooking ingredient. This booklet from 1946 features recipes using Borden's Eagle Brand Condensed Milk.
