- Postcard, "The Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California," 1936 - Spence Air Photos, an aerial survey company, documented the rapid urbanization of Southern California during the 1920s and 1930s. This Spence Air Photos image shows the Rose Bowl, an outdoor athletic stadium that opened in Pasadena, ten miles outside of Los Angeles, in 1922. The Rose Bowl is best known as the site of the eponymous annual postseason college football game.

- Harbor Freeway in Los Angeles, California, 1956 - Few American cities embraced the automobile like Los Angeles. The southern California metropolis opened the first of its many limited-access freeways in 1940. Work on the Harbor Freeway, seen here, began in the early 1950s. Now designated Interstate 110, this freeway connects the downtown area with the Port of Los Angeles to the south, and with Pasadena to the northeast.

Permanent stalls soon replaced the trucks and by the late 1940s -- this postcard's date -- the Farmer's Market had become a favorite place for Hollywood stars, out-of-town tourists, and local families to meet, eat, and shop.

- "Wawona. Mariposa Big Tree Grove," 1915-1920 - People love to buy and send postcards that document their travels. This postcard depicts "Wawona" in the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees in Yosemite National Park. A human-made tunnel was cut through the giant Sequoia in 1881, allowing vehicles to pass through the tree's massive trunk. Tourists flocked to see it. The tree fell in 1969, but it remains a popular tourist attraction.

"Wawona. Mariposa Big Tree Grove," 1915-1920
People love to buy and send postcards that document their travels. This postcard depicts "Wawona" in the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees in Yosemite National Park. A human-made tunnel was cut through the giant Sequoia in 1881, allowing vehicles to pass through the tree's massive trunk. Tourists flocked to see it. The tree fell in 1969, but it remains a popular tourist attraction.
