- "Old Train on New Jersey Roads," circa 1857 - The Camden & Amboy Railroad, connecting greater Philadelphia with greater New York City, opened in 1832. The railroad's first locomotive, shown in this illustration, was imported from England and named <EM>John Bull</EM> in honor of its heritage. Mechanic Isaac Dripps assembled the locomotive and, about 1833, installed a cowcatcher at front. The device became a hallmark of early American locomotives.
