Artifact Overview
The Camden & Amboy Railroad, connecting greater Philadelphia with greater New York City, opened in 1832. The railroad's first locomotive, shown in this illustration, was imported from England and named John Bull in honor of its heritage. Mechanic Isaac Dripps assembled the locomotive and, about 1833, installed a cowcatcher at front. The device became a hallmark of early American locomotives.
