Young employees can learn new skills and gain hands-on knowledge needed for future careers. In 1979, the manager of the Dairy Queen in Harvester, Missouri, showed his appreciation to his workers graduating from high school by adding their names to the restaurant's marquee.

His book, "Hacking the Xbox," is a controversial guidebook for the "mod-chipping" movement.

Among his early achievements were an automatic door, a photoelectric bar code reader and a magnetic recording system -- a key component in his programmable devices. In 1954, Devol submitted a patent application for his most notable invention -- the first industrial robot. The patent, 2988237, was issued in 1961.
