- Transoceanic Voice Cables, circa 1956 - The opening of the TAT-1 (Transatlantic No. 1) cable in 1956 made it possible to place long-distance telephone calls across the Atlantic Ocean. Until this cable was installed, voice transmission over long distances occurred through an unreliable and expensive radio relay system. The TAT-1 responded to an increased demand for instant communication, establishing the first accessible international telephone service.

- Edison Diamond Disc Record, "Charmant Oiseau (from La Perle de Brasil)" and a Message for Thomas Edison, 1915 - This rare recording was the brainchild of Thomas Edison's Chief Engineer Miller R. Hutchison. A group of Edison's friends and business associates gathered at Edison's West Orange, New Jersey, laboratory as this pre-recorded speech was played during a telephone call made to Edison over the newly completed transcontinental telephone line. Edison was visiting the 1915 Pan-American Exhibition in San Francisco on the opposite coast. This recording was never sold commercially.

- Section of Submarine Cable Laid Between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace, Michigan, 1918 - In July of 1918 a submarine telephone cable was laid between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace, uniting Michigan's Northern and Southern Peninsulas. The 24,000-foot cable was capable of handling 21 simultaneous calls. After a successful installation, the crew onboard the cable-laying ship celebrated with toasts of grape juice due to Prohibition restrictions in Michigan.

- American Bell Desk Telephone Set, Used at the Opening of the Boston to Chicago Telephone Line, 1893 - This ornate desk telephone was used by Governor William Russell during the opening demonstration of the Boston-Chicago long-distance telephone line. Reporters marveled at how two cities could be "united by a strand of copper, 1200 miles long." This exchange was an early hub of AT&T's long-distance network, allowing a swift collapse of distance through the connecting power of innovative telecommunication.
