From August 1928 to June 1930, Richard Byrd led an expedition to the Antarctic with 83 men, four ships, and three airplanes. On November 28-29, 1929, Byrd and three crewmates made the first flight over the South Pole. - Letter from Edsel Ford to John D. Rockefeller Jr. regarding Donation to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, September 30, 1927 - After becoming friends with philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Edsel Ford began to partner with him on numerous charitable efforts, including donating money to establish Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When Rockefeller found another way to completely cover the cost of the park, he suggested Ford transfer his donation over to Shenandoah National Park, to which Ford obliged.
