- "Vote for Hoffa" Teamsters Button, 1937-1967 - Jimmy Hoffa became involved in the Teamsters Union in Detroit in the 1930s and later served as president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1957 to 1971. Union membership grew during his tenure. However, the union was also heavily criticized for its ties to organized crime and the use of violence. Hoffa mysteriously disappeared in 1975 and was never heard from again.
