Birdcage, 1800-1850

Summary

Early 19th-century bird fanciers captured songbirds and kept them as pets. The birds' flying antics, colorful plumage and melodic songs brightened many households. Some songbird owners kept their birds safe and contained in birdcages. Others allowed their birds to fly freely about in rooms and provided the cage as a place for the birds to roost.
