Summary

German automaker Opel introduced an advanced racing engine for the 1913 Grand Prix de France. The 4.5-liter, four-cylinder unit featured an overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder. The following year, Opel enlarged the engine to 12.3 liters and placed it into a car nicknamed the "Green Monster." The 260-horsepower engine sped the car at 140 miles per hour.
