On April 30, 1987, Bill Elliott set NASCAR's all-time qualifying record when he hit 212.809 miles per hour at Talladega Superspeedway in his 1987 Ford Thunderbird. Elliott won six Cup Series races that season, finishing second in the overall points standings. Ford used Elliott's success to promote its production Thunderbird in this advertising poster.
