Artifact Overview

George Washington led the Continental Army as commander-in-chief during the American Revolutionary War. Troops under his direct command were defending Philadelphia -- then the nation's capital -- when Washington wrote this letter requesting aid "without a moments loss of time" from fellow Major General Israel Putnam. Just three days later, September 26, 1777, the British took the capital city.
