Letter from George Washington to Major General Israel Putnam, September 28, 1777

01

Artifact Overview

George Washington led the Continental Army as commander-in-chief during the American Revolutionary War. Two days after the British had taken Philadelphia -- then the nation's capital -- Washington sent this letter to fellow Major General Israel Putman. His text shows characteristic attentiveness and compassion -- Washington demands additional troops "as soon as possible without injuring or harassing the men too much."
