Summary

In the 1930s and 1940s, auto mechanic Fred Offenhauser refined a racing car engine designed by influential car builder Harry Miller. In 1946, engine-builder Dale Drake and driver Louis Meyer bought Offenhauser's company. Scores of mechanics and drivers made constant improvements to the powerful "Offy" engines, which dominated American open-wheel racing for 40 years.
