Yellowstone National Park, established 1872, was America's first national park. Hayden Valley is filled with large, open meadows on either side of the Yellowstone River--the remains of an ancient lakebed. The valley, nine miles long and six miles wide, is the year-round home for nearly a thousand bison. Elk and grizzly bears also frequent the valley.
