01

Artifact Overview

Jim Clark changed the face of the Indianapolis 500 in 1965 with his victory in a Lotus Type 38 powered by a rear-mounted Ford V-8 engine. Indy traditionalists, more familiar with front-engine roadsters, questioned Clark's lightweight Formula One-style chassis. But Clark silenced the doubters when he won with a record-setting average race speed of 150.686 miles per hour.
