Artifact Overview

Saxony-style spinning wheels allowed the operator to turn unprocessed fiber into thread. The distaff--the stationary rod at the front--held the flax as the flier, powered by foot using a treadle, spun it into thread. The bobbin near the flier held finished thread. Major Joseph Gregg (1741-1804), a New Hampshire-born Revolutionary War solider, made this spinning wheel.
