Willy T. Ribbs competed in Trans-Am and NASCAR events through the 1980s, earning 17 victories in the Trans-Am Series. In 1991, Ribbs made history as the first Black driver to qualify for and compete in the Indianapolis 500. Engine problems ended his race after five laps, but Ribbs returned to Indy in 1993 and finished in 21st place.
