Henry Ford endured perhaps the most difficult year of his life in 1943. Edsel Ford, his only child, passed away that May. Though their relationship had grown strained through the years, Henry was devastated by Edsel's death. His decision to succeed his son as Ford Motor Company's president further strained Henry's already fragile health.
