Slot car racing was a popular hobby by the early 1960s. A small electric motor, powered by current running through the track, ran the car faster or slower as the driver moved a plunger. Like real cars, slot cars could be tuned. High-performance tires, gold-plated pickup shoes, and small amounts of oil all might increase a slot car's speed.
