Chatelaine Purse, circa 1905

01

Artifact Overview

Suspended from a chain worn around the waist, a chatelaine purse was typically just big enough to store a few essential items. The metal frames could be purchased and patterns to make chatelaine purses could be found in Godey's Lady Book or Harper's Bazaar -- "indoor" purses were suggested to be made with velvet or silk, and "outdoor" purses in leather.
