Boy's Bathing Suit, circa 1885

01

Artifact Overview

Boys going swimming in the late 19th century often wore nothing at all -- unless in the presence of girls. When clothing was required, a one-piece cotton swimsuit like this was typical. This suit is a rare survival. Such ordinary clothing was not considered important enough to keep and often did not last.
