The Lincoln Guard of Honor was formed in 1880. The organization's stated purposes were to raise funds to purchase and repair Abraham Lincoln's Springfield, Illinois home, collect relics and hold memorial services for the slain president. Privately, the group protected the whereabouts of the body of the president following the failed attempt by grave robbers to steal the corpse in 1876.
