Boot Scraper, 1875-1900

In the nineteenth century, boots and shoes became soiled as pedestrians walked through unpaved streets filled with mud, muck, and horse manure. Scrapers, placed outside homes, offices, and other buildings, reminded those who entered to wipe off their shoes and helped keep floors and carpets clean. The scraper's blade removed stuck-on gunk from shoes and boots before it was tracked inside.
