Mourning Brooch, circa 1885

In the late 1800s, mourners relied on a variety of ways to remember loved ones who had died. This brooch contains a tintype of the deceased while still alive. The image, set in a gold oval, is encircled by a black enamel band. These personal mementos helped the bereaved move through the grieving process.
