Santa Stopping at a Food Stand for Refreshment, "Happy Xmas," 1951

01

Artifact Overview

During the holidays, friends and neighbors commonly exchange commercially printed cards wishing one another a Merry or Happy Christmas -- a tradition believed to have started in England in the 1840s. Ruth Murrell, a 20th-century English artist and children's book illustrator, designed this card showing Santa stopping off for refreshments before continuing work on his big night.
