Confederate Sergeant's Boots, 1863

For Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, boots were generally private purchase--only shoes were supplied to Confederate troops. These boots belonged to young Mifflin Clowe, sergeant in the 1st Battalion, Virginia Infantry. Known as the Ordnance or Armory Battalion, this Richmond-based battalion was responsible for defending the armory and other manufacturing facilities in Richmond, Virginia.
