Trade Card for Warner's Safe Yeast, H.H. Warner & Co., circa 1885

01

Artifact Overview

Hulbert Harrington Warner, a wealthy fire- and burglar-proof safe manufacturer, purchased medicinal formulas in the late 1800s and turned them into a multi-million-dollar patent medicine business. He also made and sold yeast. Warner advertised these products as "safe" -- alluding to his original business enterprise. The colorful illustration on this trade card touted Warner's "Safe Yeast" and its perceived -- though unproven -- health benefits.
