Artifact Overview
Johannis Nys was born, trained and worked as a silversmith in New York in the late 17th century. From 1698 until his death in 1723, he worked in Philadelphia. New York craftsmen like Nys produced wares in ornate Dutch styles. Distinctive elements such as the corkscrew thumb rest and heart-shaped finial at the base are characteristic of pieces from New York.
