Howdy Doody Ice Cream Cake Roll Carton, circa 1945

01

Artifact Overview

By the 1940s, refrigerated trucks were transporting pre-packaged ice cream to retail outlets nationwide. Self-serve freezer cabinets in grocery stores allowed shoppers to purchase different ice cream flavors and novelties. This ice cream cake roll took advantage of the highly popular Howdy Doody children's TV show (1947-1960). Howdy Doody, a freckle-faced marionette, was created by radio announcer Bob Smith.
