Artifact Overview
This jug was made at the Julius Norton pottery in Bennington, Vermont, in the 1840s. The ovoid-shaped jug, impressed with the name of the pottery owner, is made of stoneware--a durable, leak-proof pottery. Potters threw handfuls of common rock salt into a white-hot kiln during the piece's firing to create the orange-peel-like outer glaze.
