Firefighters wore protective helmets when responding to fires. But many departments also issued dress uniform hats for firefighters to wear for parades, ceremonies, and other civic occasions. This hat was made by Joseph Cogan, who manufactured firefighting and military equipment in Boston, Massachusetts.
