Adams-Farwell 5-Cylinder Air-Cooled Airplane Engine, circa 1908

With roots dating to 1883, Iowa-based Adams-Farwell built automobiles from 1905 to 1912. Its cars were distinguished by air-cooled, revolving-cylinder rotary engines that rotated around a fixed shaft. The company manufactured aircraft engines too, including this five-cylinder example built about 1908. Adams-Farwell engines typically rotated horizontally around a vertical shaft. This engine was modified to run around a horizontal shaft.
