Twist Auger with a Turned Handle, 1900-1920

For centuries, the hands of carpenters, shipwrights, wheelwrights, coopers, and furniture and instrument makers, among others, have twisted a spiral auger bit into wood to create holes. We still use augers today, but power drills ease the burden of manually turning a bit.
