Artifact Overview
James Price joined Ford Motor Company in 1917. Price, a former tailor's assistant, rose through the ranks and in the early 1920s became the first salaried African-American employee at Ford. In the 1930s, Mr. Price oversaw purchasing of industrial diamonds and other abrasives used to grind, smooth, and polish automobile components. He retired in 1947 and opened an office supply store in Detroit.
