Artifact Overview

In 1833, John Stephenson invented and patented the first streetcar to run on rails in the United States. A fire destroyed his first coachbuilding business in 1832, and the Panic of 1837 destroyed his second. But he was successful the third time, at the advertised West 27th Street location, which opened in 1843.
