Artifact Overview
The mutoscope was developed in 1895 to rival Thomas Edison's kinetoscope. Mutoscope motion pictures were a single-viewer experience; viewers would hand-crank the machine at their preferred speed to watch a flipbook movie through a peephole. The production arm of American Mutoscope and Biograph Company was re-named Biograph Company and was a pioneering film studio during the silent movie era.
