Artifact Overview

Riding a bicycle could be uncomfortable without a proper seat or saddle. This 1897 advertisement from the A. G. Spalding and Brothers touted the Christy Anatomical saddle. The split padded seat provided a cushion for the pelvis and sensitive areas -- something riders appreciated. Physicians, according to the ad, also approved of the design.
