Charles Brady King earned his place in Detroit history on March 6, 1896, when he drove the first gasoline-powered automobile in the city. King lacked the resources to refine his experimental vehicle into a production car, but he advised Henry Ford on Ford's own experimental Quadricycle automobile. Oliver Barthel later helped Ford build his "Sweepstakes" race car.
