The Saalfield Publishing Company was founded in 1900, at first producing dictionaries and Bibles. The first Saalfield paper dolls were produced in 1918. Military toys and play sets became particularly popular during and just after World War II, when patriotism was especially strong, as evidenced by this set from 1943.
