In 1878, a group of cycling enthusiast formed the Boston Bicycle Club, the first in the United States. The group promoted cycling and its benefits. A year later, the group organized the Wheel Around the Hub, a two-day, 100-mile bicycle journey around Boston, Massachusetts. Nearly forty men participated, including leading bicycle manufacturer Colonel Albert A. Pope.
