Artifact Overview

Chrysler Corporation created a gas turbine engine that overcame two persistent challenges: fuel consumption and exhaust heat. The Plymouth sedan pictured here was the first production-model passenger car successfully powered by a gas turbine engine. Eventually, the company created vehicles intended for volume production, but complaints about fuel efficiency -- and rising gas prices -- ultimately killed the turbine dream.
