Ice Creepers, 1885-1930

01

Artifact Overview

People strap creepers to their shoes and boots to travel safely over icy terrain. In the late 19th and early 20th century, these safety devices were commonly worn by workers who harvested ice. The pointed metal spikes dug into the ice when working on frozen lakes and ponds -- or on icy surfaces inside frigid warehouses where the ice was stored.
