Ellen Marion Kinzie Doll, Souvenir From Century of Progress Exposition, 1933

01

Artifact Overview

Chicago's 1933-34 Century of Progress Exposition used the theme of progress to buoy national optimism during the Great Depression. Many fairgoers returned home with mementos, such as this doll of Ellen Marion Kinzie, which was likely created for children attending the fair. Ellen, the daughter of a fur trader, was considered the first child of European descent to be born in Chicago.
