Caroline Amelia Taylor married Barney Litogot in Huron, Michigan, in May 1861. Barney Litogot was the brother of Henry Ford's mother, Mary. At the time of this portrait, Barney was serving in the Union army. In 1873, Barney was appointed keeper of the lighthouse on Mamajuda Island in the Detroit River. When Barney died later that year, Caroline remained as lighthouse keeper and served until 1885.
