Artifact Overview
Like everything else about the Ford Model A, the car's transmission differed from its predecessor in the Model T. The Model A's lever-activated, three-speed sliding-gear unit was an improvement over the T's foot-pedal, two-speed planetary gearset. By the time the A debuted for 1928, sliding-gear transmissions were the industry standard, despite Henry Ford's longtime preference for planetary transmissions.
